Referring to a term, first coined in the 19th century, for the almost divine status conferred upon the biggest icons of the arts and sports world, Sacred Monsters indeed unites two such stars of contrasting classical dance disciplines for a meeting of the bodies and minds "so sensational it takes the breath away." (London's Daily Telegraph). Sylvia Guillem is perhaps the world's most celebrated ballerina, formerly Rudolf Nureyev's protégé, reigning star of the Paris Opera Ballet, and longtime principal guest artist at the Royal Ballet. British-Asian choreographer and dancer Akram Khan is renowned for his groundbreaking work fusing Western contemporary dance with Indian classical kathak. Together, they journey to new places neither has gone before in a series of solos, duos, and ruminations on the nature of stardom and their struggles for artistic freedoms. Featuring additional choreography by Lin Hwai-min, artistic director of Taiwan's Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, the work is set to a hypnotic live musical accompaniment, written and performed (along with vocalists and percussion) by cellist Phillip Sheppard.
