Olivier Messiaen's
Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus
Christopher Taylor has earned a sterling reputation for his exquisite readings of Bach, and his 2005 Cal Performances appearance, in which he tackled all 28 of György Ligeti's fiendishly explosive and intricate piano études, was described as "a magnificent, Herculean undertaking" by the San Francisco Chronicle. The young pianist is currently astonishing the music world with his tour de force programming of Olivier Messiaen's Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus, some of the most demanding and complex piano music ever written (and he plays the 176-page score from memory!). "A fervent and almost orchestral performance" (The Washington Post).

Apparition of the Eternal Church, a documentary by Paul Festa
7 pm,, Fri, Jan 25
Wheeler Auditorium
A diverse group of listeners, from controversial author Harold Bloom to composer and Messaien student Richard Felciano to drag star Justin Bond ("Kiki & Herb"), react to composer Olivier Messaien's monumental organ work Apparition of the Eternal Church. The experiment is to have 31 people put the violent contradictions of Messiaen's music into words. The result is a collective interpretation improvising its way through an aesthetic landscape defined by paradox. Resolution confronts eternity, eroticism asceticism, spiritual ecstasy physical torture. Together, in a conversation that is by turns profound, poignant and hilarious, the music and its interpreters conjure something like what William Blake famously called the marriage of heaven and hell.
52 minutes. Following the screening, Paul Festa will hold a discussion with the audience. Visit http://www.apparitionfilm.com/ for more information on the film. Free and open to the public. (More information).
