with Peter Serkin, piano
& Richard Lalli, baritone
Named after Antonie Brentano, considered by many to be Beethoven's "Immortal Beloved," the Brentano String Quartet was formed in 1992 and soon garnered both the first Cleveland Quartet Award and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award. The group has worked closely with some of the most important composers of our time, and will perform a new and eagerly anticipated work by Charles Wuorinen in Berkeley. Joining the ensemble are pianist Peter Serkin, an artist whose expressive style and range only deepen with each passing year, and gifted baritone Richard Lalli. "A magnificent string quartet...This was wonderful, selfless music making" (The Times, London).
Program: Haydn/Quartet in D Minor, Op. 76, No. 2 (Quinten); Wuorinen/New Piano Quintet (commissioned by the artists); Schoenberg/"Ode to Napoleon" (for quartet, piano, and baritone); Beethoven/Grosse Fuge, Op. 133
