It has been six years since Baaba Maal's last concert at Cal Performances, but for anyone present at that glorious celebration of song, the memory is unforgettable. A living legend in his native Senegal, Maal is known as "the Nightingale" for the stunning power and purity of his voice, and over the years, he has honed a unique sound fusing traditional African music with elements of reggae, pop, R&B, soul, jazz, and blues. Maal's dazzling live performances—featuring a panoply of singers, dancers, and drummers—are "spectacular...setting alight a blaze of polyrhythms that barely lets up for the next two hours" (The Independent, London).

	Education/Community Events Collaboration with the UC Berkeley Center for African Studies: Angelique Kidjo (Feb 20) & Baaba Maal (Apr 20), Zellerbach Hall Two outstanding African musicians-Angelique Kidjo of Benin and Baaba Maal of Senegal-perform at Zellerbach Hall in spring 2010. Prior to their concerts, each will share their artistic message in interviews with Center for African Studies affiliated faculty.
